If you suffer from back pain you are not alone. Nearly 80% of the population at some point in their lives experience some type of pain in their back or neck. Sometimes back pain can happen suddenly for example, after lifting a heavy object or taking a golf swing. On other occasions the pain can build up over time.

it’s been about 5years since the back of my neck started to feel really stiff and soar. I’ve been to chiropractors’ office but they seem to give me temporary relief rather than a perment treatment. When I put my head back my neck feels really soar and stiff almost like I have a steel plate in my neck. The doctors say that it’s just posture and sleeping position, but the pain has been with me so long that I think there might be something else wrong. What can I do???

Spinal pain is very common, and has been a frequent topic in my Research Reviews over the years. The estimated lifetime prevalence for cervical (neck) pain is 35-40%, 11-15% for thoracic (mid-back) pain, 60-80% for lumbar (low back) pain, and 15% for pelvic pain. Despite our best efforts clinically and with advanced imaging, the exact cause of most cases of spinal pain remains elusive.

Chiropractors use a manual treatment technique referred to as a chiropractic adjustment to change the health of the patients that they work with. Patients seek out chiropractors for many different health concerns, but most commonly for problems such as lower back pain, headaches, and neck pain. But what exactly do chiropractic adjustments do?

Many people suffer with back pain; this can either be slight pain or chronic back pain. No matter how severe the pain, pain is an indicator that you should go and visit an Oxford Chiropractor. Most people think that if they have a slight pain they do not need to visit an Oxford Chiropractic clinic, this is not the case though.

My entire viewpoint has been changed with this experience to the place where I find myself telling people who are complaining about their back and neck to find a chiropractor and give him or her a try. They are professionals who really know what they are doing and if they can’t help you they will refer you to another doctor who can. The worse thing is to let your fear stop you from getting the relief that you need from the pain.

Yoga in Harvard Square – Located in the heart of Harvard Square, Yoga in Harvard Square’s founder Portia Brockway’s teaching style is flowing and moderate in intensity. Kripalu-certified, Portia leads six classes per week, regular group, prenatal and postnatal. Classes are small, offering individualized attention to beginners and more experienced students alike. The orientation of classes is introspective, while respecting the need for form and alignment in improving and maintaining the health and vitality of body, mind and spirit. Through stretching and strengthening exercises joined with breathing and relaxation techniques such as guided visualization, yoga will relax you and build your strength poise and confidence and help to lose your back pain.

You can actually practice deep breathing anywhere – while you’re meditating, doing yogic postures, waiting to give a speech, or in your car stuck in traffic. Most forms of meditation include some type of breath practice, according to Jahnke. Breathing deeply and slowly helps you calm down and feel more relaxed. Yoga Nidra is a way to practice deep breathing – you actually slip automatically into it. The idea is to do it slowly. If you want, you can then see that you are actually breathing using the abdomen.

So, yoga works not only with the physical body (to relieve back pain) but also with increasingly more subtle energy bodies. Hence, because yoga really is a vast and steady river of light, it can, and does, support all those who will travel upon its waters, for however far a distance they would travel. So, even a short journey for some good health is quite acceptable. This special river, alluring in subtle ways, has a vibrancy that eventually draws back most who have come to its shores.

Yoga first attempts to reach the mind, where health begins, for mental choices strongly affect the health of the body. Choices of food, types of exercise, which thoughts to think, etc. As practiced traditionally in India, Yoga includes a set of ethical imperatives and moral precepts, including diet, exercise, and meditative aspects. In the West, Yoga focuses primarily on postures (gentle stretching exercises), breathing exercises, and meditation. Yoga is frequently used in Western medicine to enhance health and treat chronic disease as well as stress and back pain.

I get asked this question and ones like it a lot; the short answer is YES. You probably did not expect me to say that did you? Probably if I was smart, I would come up with some compelling reasons why this is not true, but what can I say, the answer is YES.

An ATM (Active Therapeutic Movements) based treatment is a combined clinician/patient effort to manage and control musculoskeletal pain and is based upon Physical Therapy principals and the works of Brian Mulligan, PT, PNZP (Hon), Diploma MT who is an International Lecturer in manual therapy and a world renowned author & other Physical Therapists. Back Project’s ATM2 enables personalized body repositioning for finding unique, pain-free position for each user. Once this position is found, the systems stabilize the patient allowing specific neuromuscular training based on body movement isolation that aims to achieve and sustain immediate pain reduction, increase range of motion, and improve function. I went rock climbing yesterday and I’ve had this pain on the right side of my neck. It only hurts when i lean my head to the right though. I really need to get rid of this problem because it hurts too much to go climbing. My dad showed my some neck exercises but the pain comes back after a couple minutes. If anyone knows some neck exercises or home remedies or something for this i would greatly appreciated if you helped.

I have severe to moderate upper back and neck pain since I was in high school. I have seen a few doctors about it but all they do is give me pain pills and often see nothing wrong. I have seen a few chiropractors as well consistantly, which helps for maybe a day but when I wake up the next morning I’m in pain again. I am 23 years old and it already has progressed to a state that it will at times interfere with normal everyday activities and now it is starting to effect my shoulders (it almost feels like they are slightly out of joint and pinching a nerve and the pain just shoots down my arm). I am very petite; 5’4” and weigh 103pds so I know it’s not a weight issue and It is not caused by large breasts either. Does anyone know any doctors, exercises, or surgeries I could look into. Has anyone else experienced this problem? Any advise would be greatly appreciated : )

If you have insurance I would go straight to a physical therapist that works with a chiropractor. I’ve been going to one for awhile that will loosen the muscles and straighten my back up while helping me strengthen the area that is weak. I’m guessing your pain is a reflex of an area that needs to be worked on and maybe even strengthened after having it looked at.
If your neck has more flexibility after some simple stretches (i.e. holding the top of your head with your hand and pulling your head towards your shoulder while facing foward for a few seconds on each side, then the same foward) but if not, it might be a nerve or something out of line. And if you crack your neck for relief, that could be another cause of your neck tensing up if it is out of alignment already. The cracking of your neck is just a quick shot of adrenaline that feels good but doesn’t do anything for your “health” normally. Anyways, I would see someone if possible, maybe get some home workout pointers online from a reliable source (based on the area that hurts) and I would sleep on your back trying to keep your neck flat as possible or if you can put a arch in it by your shoulders (not in the middle of the neck) to relieve a little of the stress in the neck and shoulder area IF it’s pinpointed there. Anyways, I’m not a doctor, so these are only ideas and you should definately go talk to one yourself! Good luck!
