We put our bodies – and specifically, our spines – through an enormous amount of stress during a typical day. When we’re young, this stress rarely produces discomfort in our lower backs and legs. When we reach middle age, however, the aches and pain become obvious.

Here in Glastonbury Connecticut, we hit record a record high of 102 degrees F. Not the type of weather that you want to be out and about, but still it is the season to be doing outdoor activities such as gardening. Getting out into the sunshine is important for exercise and also to get our required vitamin D. Many patients spend hours getting their flowers and bushes planted. Unfortunately, they don’t always give their body the same respect and loving care. Here are some tips you can use to protect your back and body while gardening:

  • Pushing or pulling when bent over can cause strain to the shoulders and lower back area. When you can use tools with longer handles, so that you don’t have to bend down as mcuh. Raking, digging, or mowing is a lot more ergonomic and comfortable when you use long handled tools.

  • Be careful with lfiting dirt, leaves and mulch. Carry the load close to your body, and use your knees when lifting. Keeping your back straight and knees bent ill help to avoid injuries and lower back pain
  • When raking, hoeing or shoveling, switch your dominant hand. This can prevent prolonged straining on your dominant side which can lead to muscle spams and pain.
  • Don’t try to accomplish 1/2 years worth of gardening into one day- pace yourself and give your body a break
  • Drink lots of water while working in the garden. Your garden needs water, and so does your body !

Keep these gardening tips in mind next time you are out gardening. Your garden will be bountiful, because you can get out there day after day. Gardening the right way can prevent unnecessary aches and pains.

When we are young we seem to think that we can stand up to anything. We think that our body parts are invincible and that we are going to live forever. We like to think that the human body is a complete, finished design and that it is the most advanced that it will ever be. We think that we are invincible. But, those of us who suffer from back pain caused by spinal stenosis, herniated, ruptured or bulging disc symptoms, or any form of degenerate disc disease or spinal malady will most likely disagree.

I recently had an MRI, and the results came back. They said I had a disc protrusion compressing against my nerves. They also suggested to see a neurosurgeon.
I’m only 18 years old, and have no idea what that means, besides the fact that my disc is protruding out into my nerves, causing a lot of pain. The pain has been around almost 2 years now and I’ve decided recently to get it checked out.
Could someone explain what is actually going on, and what might the neurosurgeon actually do to me?

A spinal fusion procedure is one of the most universal approaches to back surgery, regardless of the diagnosed source of symptoms. Fusion is used to treat abnormal spinal curvatures, vertebral alignment issues, advanced arthritic changes, extreme disc desiccation and a variety of bulging and ruptured disc concerns. If a condition is theorized to cause chronic back pain, it is likely to be a candidate for fusion surgery.

As a Doctor of Chiropractic here in Dallas, Texas, I work with a lot of patients who have joints that are misaligned. I provide various chiropractic treatments to cure this problem and I want to explain why the misalignment and lock up occurs. The function of each joint is to move two bones in relation to each other under muscular action. The muscles act, when they receive impulses, through nerves that originate in the spinal cord. The vertebral joints are like most other joints in that they move within defined limits corresponding to muscle activity that is controlled by nerves streaming from the spinal cord.

Very often injury, improper posture or other factors can irritate sensitive joint capsules that hold the lubricant that bathes the joint. A protective response is triggered that sends messages to muscles that control the joint, causing them to contract.

The result is to confine movement that might create more pain. This mechanism can also be triggered by injury or stress to other parts of the vertebra, such as its ligaments, disc, nerve, bone and even its own muscles. So any strain or injury to the joint or its associated structures may cause a muscle contraction that locks the joint partially or in its entirety. That locking can occur with the joint in its neutral “aligned” position or, if muscles contract, from its neutral position, the bones appear “out of alignment”.

The mechanism serves a purpose while the injured tissue is healing by acting as nature’s own joint splint. If you get a cut on your hand, you see how fast your cut heals, the skin becomes elastic and returns to normal. Unfortunately the spinal splinting mechanism can sometimes go wrong long beyond the time needed to revive the damaged tissue. The contracting muscle can be so over effective that it constricts its own blood supply, releasing acids that build up and trigger nerve endings into sensing pain, creating a further protective spasm. A vicious cycle has been completed. In such an area one ligament might be held in stretch while the opposite side remains lax. As time passes, the ligaments will respond by lengthening and shortening respectively to balance the force or pressure placed on them, perpetuating the “misaligned” appearance.

If you have a set of joints in a certain area of your back, lock up then other joints in the surrounding area must over compensate by increasing their own movement. As these other joints increase their range they become less stable and themselves run the risk of strain or premature wear and tear that results in “osteoarthritis”.

You can envision that as the affected area slowly gets tighter and stiffer, bending, lying on your back, or on one side can become a continual problem. The process can proceed unnoticed over months or even years until the over flexible area is injured and become painfully irritated. The solution is to seek chiropractic help and reduce or eliminate this from growing into a much larger problem that can lead to surgery. You should see your chiropractor at least once a year just for a routine check up because with the advances in equipment and techniques we use, you will find that simple adjustments and therapy will prevent these issues I’ve listed above from ever becoming a problem.

Conclusions: The presence of centrolateral protrusion or extrusion with gross foramen compromise correlates with clinical signs and symptoms very well, while central bulges and disc protrusions correlate poorly with clinical signs and symptoms. The presence of neural foramen compromise is more important in determining the clinical signs and symptoms while type of disc herniation (bulge, protrusion, or extrusion) correlates poorly with clinical signs and symptoms. Chances are your body weight is not the underlying culprit of your pain. There human body is made to carry quite a bit of extra weight. Our spine is such that it can bear large amounts of weight if need be.

A problem with weight and being overweight can come into play of course. For example, if you already have spinal degeneration, disc injury, and even joint malpositions, you can imagine putting added stress and force on the spine will not help. It’s like the game Jenga you stack blocks; if it can’t support itself it will fall and break.

So, like the game, if your spine is crooked and you add more weight it will cause more problems and instability. So many studies have shown us the problems associated with being overweight but back pain is not always a direct result of obesity. I typically find that back pain is often caused by a number of factors combined.

However, if your back pain started since a recent weight gain, it may be one of the precipitating factors, so try to lose those excess pounds.

Unfortunately, what I sometimes see are people who now, because of their pain cannot exercise properly; some can barely walk. Now, because of this, they have put on a lot of weight, making their problem even worse.

Luckily, we have a treatment that is very easy to do and also is able to handle larger individuals. Our drx9000 spinal decompression machine can handle body sizes of close to 400lbs and over 6ft 9 inches tall.

A herniated disc is a general term that is used to describe an inter-vertebral disc in the spine that has become damaged in some way and part of it is now pushing out into the spinal spaces in the back. Not all herniated discs are the same though; they can be classified 4 different ways, from least to most damaged. These categories are bulging, prolapsed, extruded, and sequestered.

Herniated disc symptoms can be painful for some sufferers; however, there are really some where there are absolutely no symptoms that surface and the conditions resolves by itself without anyone to notice. Sometimes, the herniated or bulging disc will only be discovered when a totally unrelated physical check-up is made for some other reason involving an MRI or a CT scan.
