So what is wellness anyway? Wellness is a relatively new term in our society and now that the concept is here, everybody seems to want to have it. Let us first define what wellness is. Wellness is a state of peak health, beyond being symptom free, that allows for an enhanced quality of life. Wellness can also be described as “the constant, conscious pursuit of living life to its fullest potential.”

For many years I’ve been a chiropractor and it is the most amazing thing to see someone shift from a symptom based pain patient to someone who is not only pain free, but functioning at a higher level of life known as wellness. It is often detected by me in subtle ways at first, an increase in the time the person is smiling, a bounce or energy in their step. Like most parents I know that fruit and vegetables are an important part of a child’s diet and too much take
away food really isn’t good for me or my children. That’s all great, but now that my children have started making choices about what food they want to eat it can be diffi cult to infl uence them to choose healthy foods.

I’ve found that keeping foods high in sugar and fat right out of the house stops any urge to snack on these things (both for me and the children). In doing this it is important to have healthy snack food as a replacement, such as fruit, crackers and vegetables, prepared in an appetising manner.

I find that take-away food can’t always be avoided but I try and limit the amount and type we eat. Also, not upsizing to a bigger meal size just because it is good value can significantly reduce the fat and sugar intake.

As always one of the biggest influences on children is being a good role model. If children see you making good food choices, and enjoying it, they are likely to want to have your portion to!

First: check in your local phone book. This is a simple way to get started. There should be at least a few pages that are specific to chiropractors. There will also be some large full page advertisements that explain fully philosophy and what they can treat. If you give them a call many will offer your first visit on the house. This will give you an opportunity to test the waters without breaking your pocket book in your search. If they don’t advertise a free first visit that you may want to ask.

Second: ask around. Many of your neighbors may have had experience with your local Columbus chiropractors. In your conversations with people ask if they have any advice on who you should see. Try to inquire about the chiropractor’s personal style. There are no chiropractic colleges in the state of Ohio so you will have a wide variety of styles to choose from.

Finally: check the internet. Many chiropractors have great websites. Try to do a specific search in a search engine for the phrase “Columbus Ohio Chiropractic”. This will give you the most relevant results. Remember that many wonderful chiropractors have sites that may not be listed highly with the search engines. Don’t get frustrated in your search. The right chiropractor is out there. Just stay diligent in your search and when you find one you like stick with them. That locking can occur with the joint in its neutral “aligned” position or, if muscles contract, from its neutral position, the bones appear “out of alignment”.

The mechanism serves a purpose while the injured tissue is healing by acting as nature’s own joint splint. If you get a cut on your hand, you see how fast your cut heals, the skin becomes elastic and returns to normal. Unfortunately the spinal splinting mechanism can sometimes go wrong long beyond the time needed to revive the damaged tissue. The contracting muscle can be so over effective that it constricts its own blood supply, releasing acids that build up and trigger nerve endings into sensing pain, creating a further protective spasm. As a chiropractor I believe in exercise, whether it’s aerobics, bike riding, or team sports. Keeping the body active keeps the body healthy and strong. However, when it comes to sports activies, it seems that sports injuries are inevitable among young and old alike. And, though many sports injuries can be very serious, I was especially happy to see that there is a current focus on concussions among young athletes who participate in school sports. The question people are asking is: Are schools doing enough to protect their student-athletes? Do you, as a parent, feel that your child is safe when participating in sports at school?  Many parents worry that their young athletes are at risk for serious sports injuries, especially concussions. In fact, the latest C.S. Mott Children’s Hospital National Poll on Children’s Health found that nearly two-thirds of parents of young athletes between the ages 12 – 17 worry that their children will get a concussion while playing school sports.

To make matters worse, researchers have found that youth athletes are more likely to sustain concussions and to take longer to recover from concussions than adults. Furthermore, if a second concussion occurs before a child’s brain recovers from the first, there is a possibility of long-term neurologic conditions.

When surveyed, most parents indicated that they would strongly support school requirements, such as:

    * If a student-athlete sustained a concussion, he or she would need to be evaluated and cleared by a doctor before returning to sports – 84 percent

    * Coaches should to receive education about the risks of concussions

    * After a concussion there should be a mandatory period of non-participation in sports

    * A certified trainer should be on-site for practices and games

High school athletic organizations, injury prevention groups and professional sports leagues have become increasingly active in promoting policies to minimize the risks of repeat concussions among young athletes. But, let’s face it, parents are in a unique position to recognize concussion signs and symptoms that occur outside of school, and to work with coaches, trainers, and other health care personnel to ensure that their child is appropriately monitored throughout his or her recovery and return to play.
